It's a little silly to compare the D40 to the 5D Mk. II. They were never built to be in the same class. The same could apply to the Canon EOS Rebel line (I own a Rebel XT, BTW) in comparison to the D3X. They're not supposed to be considered equals. And as much as I love my 5Duece, the D40 certainly has it's advantages. The biggest difference is the size! For a petite 19 year old woman, the D40 would fit right in your hands. My parents own a D40 and a couple lenses and I'm pretty sure that the 5D body weighs about twice as much. I love the feel of a beastly setup (which is why I love my 70-200mm f2.8 lens), but not everybody feels the same.
